Installation of PostgreSQL
In order to install the
PostgreSQL you'll have to download a copy of PostgreSQL installer (http://www.postgresql.org/download/
) for your operating system.
Installing PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL installation is quick
and similar to installing any wizard based software installer.
Steps are as following:
1. Double click the
postgresql-X.X.X installer.
2. PostgreSQL installation wizard
will start, which will prompt for some installation and information
screens. Continue installaiton by
clicking "Next" button.
3. Installer will create a
database user for you named "postgre" and will prompt you to provide
password for your PostgreSQL installation. Provide a password of your choice
and press "Next".
Make sure checkbox is unchecked
otherwise it unnecessarily redirect to download UI.
Now you are all set to try using
your PostgreSQL database installation.

Running PostgreSQL
As you finished installing
PostgreSQL, it's database server will start automaticlaly in background.
If not, you may try starting
PostgreSQL database server as per following steps:
1. Locate your PostgreSQL installation
entry labeled "PostgreSQL9.X" in windows "Start",
"Programs" menu.
2. Click on PostgreSQL9.X menu, a
submenu will open, click on "Start Server" item and server will
start.
This will start the PostgreSQL server in a seprate consol window.
Similraly if you like to stop
database server, follow step 2 described above but this time click on
"Stop Server" menu item to stop running the server.
PostgreSQL Administration
In order administrate you
database installation you will need to run PostgreSQL administration tool.
The pgAdmin allows you to graphically
manage and update your database installation by following the steps as follows:
1. Click the pgAdmin item in
PostgreSQL menu entry in startup bar of your Windows installation as described
in step 1 of "Running PostgreSQL" section.
2. A pgAdmin window will open.
3. You will see a tree in the
"Object Browser" window on the left half of pgAdmin window labelled
"Server1". A node named
PostgreSQL9.3 will appear below the Server1.
4. Double click the PostgreSQL9.3
node and you will see a password prompt. Provide the database password you set
in step 3 of "Installing PostgreSQL" section. (In my case password is root)
5. You will see your database
instances listed as child of the PostgreSQL9.3 node.
